At the age of 22, Duche Bradley was arrested 3 times in one year and was facing a potential 38 years in prison for possession of an automatic weapon without a license, a Grand Jury indictment, and trafficking cocaine. An attack by an inmate and a violent response forced him to make a decision: change his ways, or spend the rest of his life in prison.
At the age of 18, Duche became a proud father of his son, Bradley. He vowed to him, “I will never abandon you.” A stranger reached out to him in the darkness and gave him a bible and said eight simple words that changed his life forever.
Duche went on to work in elite professional protection, providing personal protection for Hollywood celebrities. He flew on private jets with Jennifer “J-Lo” Lopez & Marc Anthony to Spain and South America, and drove a $400k Rolls-Royce as the personal driver for Sean “Diddy” Combs. Living on Miami Beach, Duche experienced “elite” athletes and high-profile entertainers, but none were more “life-changing” than the “over-comer,” Christ Jesus.
In his adolescence, Duche’s coaches were the source of leadership and learning. As an athlete and a likely Division I recruit, changing school districts deemed him ineligible to compete his senior year of high school, making college athletics a dream no longer within his reach. Those same coaches also became the source of abandonment and betrayal.
At age nineteen, he unexpectedly became a father. Overwhelmed as a young father and discouraged by a life full of key people disappointing him, many of his decisions were unhealthy and self-destructive. Anger consumed him.
At age 19, after beating three men with a baseball bat in a heightened display of rage, a neighborhood bully assigned him the name “Dutch,” after a reputable Harlem, NY gangster. He later changed the spelling to Duchè. He began transporting narcotics from “Spanish” Harlem, NY, to Atlanta, GA. A life of interstate trafficking over the next several years escalated into violence, resulting in three arrests for serious offenses within three months. His life had changed forever. At 22 years old, he faced possibly serving 38 years in prison—1 to 2 years, 13 to 25 years in one state, and 25 to 40 years in another.
Academic pursuits transitioned Duchè to a total of seven institutions. Professors at UNC-Chapel Hill taught at the prison. Once he achieved a 4.0 GPA and qualified for “academic release,” UNC-CH did not want a felon on campus. He then matriculated to NCCU (North Carolina Central University), earning a 3.85 GPA. After his release, he transferred to Howard University, where he maintained a 4.0 GPA.
Duchè encountered three men who changed his life: the first, an inmate whose surprise attack sent him to the hospital; the second, Andrew Kirkman, serving 25 years for being “the King Pin”; and the third, a ma look n who handed him a bible and said eight life-changing words.
